Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the Palo Alto Tennis Cup and how does it differ from the previous "Grand Slam" format?
The Palo Alto Tennis Cup is a quarterly, team-based tennis tournament designed to foster camaraderie, boost competitive energy, and celebrate the Palo Alto Tennis Club (PATC) membership. It replaces the quarterly "Grand Slam" format, shifting the focus to team spirit and community engagement with more emphasis on participation. The 2025 tournament is scheduled for March 30, June 29, August 24 and November 16. For all other Saturdays/Sundays, the regular drop ins will continue.
Do I need a partner to register for the tournament?
No, you do not need a partner to register. Team captains will create pairings from the registered players
How are teams structured and what are the participation requirements?
Each tournament features two teams, White and Green, with up to 16 players each. Each team will have a dedicated team captain who sets line-ups and manages substitutions. Registered players will be informed of their team assignment before the tournament and are encouraged to wear their team's color. Captains will aim for player participation and balanced skill levels to maximize engagement.
What is the match format and scoring system used in the tournament?
Matches are played as pro-sets to 8 games, with a win-by-two rule. A 7-point tiebreak is used at 7–7. No-ad scoring is used, meaning that at deuce (40–40), the next point decides the game, with the receiving side choosing the service side for the deciding point. At the end of each round and the end of the tournament, the number of wins-losses will be totaled to determine the overall winning team.
What happens in case of weather delays or player no-shows?
In case of weather delays or rain, the start may be delayed or matches may be shortened if courts are unplayable. Communication about changes or cancellations will be sent via email. If you register and become unavailable, please inform the Tournament Director immediately. Please don’t be a No-show.
